However, an organization at CMM ® maturity level 3 has several possible<br />

ways to transition to <strong>CMMI</strong> ® maturity level 3, as shown in Figure 6.8. Such<br />

an organization can attempt to extend those PAs with roots in the CMM ® ,<br />

such as RD or TS, <strong>and</strong> then implement those PAs that are not in the CMM ® ,<br />

such as DAR. Alternatively, it can transition to <strong>CMMI</strong> ® maturity level 2, <strong>and</strong><br />

then add maturity level 3 practices as shown in Figure 6.8(a). A hybrid<br />

approach can also be devised, in which an enhanced organizational st<strong>and</strong>ard<br />

<strong>process</strong> <strong>and</strong> associated tailoring criteria can be developed <strong>and</strong> implemented.<br />

Level 2 PAs can then be transitioned to the <strong>CMMI</strong> ® <strong>using</strong> GP 3.1 <strong>and</strong> 3.2<br />

generic practices, <strong>and</strong> finally all level 3 PAs including those that were added<br />

to the <strong>CMMI</strong> ® can be implemented as shown in Figure 6.8(b).<br />

The continuous representation provides even more options. An organization<br />

without previous <strong>process</strong> <strong>improvement</strong> experience may choose to first<br />

institutionalize all PAs by <strong>using</strong> threads. In this approach, the enabling PAs<br />

(explained in Chapter 5 <strong>and</strong> reinforced earlier in this chapter) are imple-
