10. SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS<br />

The following section presents Best Management Practices and Safety Considerations for site operations.<br />

The items specified should be followed and provide practices and rules which will assist in providing<br />

employees a safe workplace.<br />

The following practices will be expressly forbidden during field operations:<br />

Entrance onto the site or into designated restricted area(s) without formal authorization,<br />

compliance with medical monitoring and training requirements, and/or compliance with this<br />

SHSP.<br />

Eating, drinking, chewing gum or tobacco, smoking, or any practice that increases the<br />

probability of hand-to-mouth transfer and ingestion of material in any area designated as<br />

contaminated.<br />

Approach or entry into areas or spaces where toxic or explosive concentrations of gases,<br />

vapors, or dusts exist without prior approval of the SHSS and/or utilization of proper<br />

protective equipment.<br />

Facial hair, which interferes with the satisfactory fit of the mask-to-face seal of respirators, is<br />

prohibited for personnel required to wear respiratory protection equipment.<br />

The use/wearing of personal stereo headphones. Their use may preclude reception of audible<br />

warning signals and/or hazard communication.<br />

The following practices are required:<br />

Personnel and equipment in the contaminated area will be minimized, consistent with<br />

effective site operations.<br />

Equipment shall be bonded and grounded, spark-proof and explosion resistant, as appropriate<br />

to minimize or prevent the ignition or flammable materials in the work zone.<br />

A minimum of two employees, in constant communication (either visual or voice) with each<br />

other, will be required to perform any work within the exclusion zone.<br />

10.1 Vehicle And Equipment Operations<br />

Prior to the use of all vehicles and equipment, operators will conduct a safety inspection and record the<br />

findings in a Safety Inspection Equipment Checklist. Dust suppressants will be used to the extent<br />

possible for controlling airborne dust generation to the extent possible. In addition, vehicular traffic<br />

speed on non-paved roads will be restricted to 15 miles per hour. Motor vehicles and material handling<br />

equipment assigned to this site shall conform to the requirements of 29 CFR, Parts 1926.601, and<br />

1926.602. Crews utilizing personnel transport vehicles to and from the work site shall use the vehicle's<br />

safety belts. Drivers of vehicles shall be responsible for passenger utilization of the safety belts.<br />

Personnel are not allowed to ride in the bed of pickup trucks unless there is an approved restraint system<br />

installed and used. The Project Superintendent is responsible for maintaining a clean job site free from<br />

hazards and for providing safe access and egress from the site. Traffic cones and/or high visibility barrier<br />
