Mobile<br />

Solid footing. Use outriggers with rubber-tired cranes.<br />

10.2.9 Forklifts<br />

Barricade area of swing of counterweight.<br />

Keep boom, lines, and loads at least 15 ft away from electric power lines. Minimum distance<br />

increases above 50,000 volts. Power lines must be de-energized to work closer than the<br />

minimum distance.<br />

The operator shall avoid swinging loads over workmen's heads. Only one signalman at any<br />

one time.<br />

Equipment shall be inspected before each use and all deficiencies corrected before further<br />

use.<br />

You must be authorized by your supervisor before operating this equipment.<br />

Keep forks spread as far apart as possible. Check stability of load before moving it.<br />

Look in direction of travel before moving and during moving. Watch out for overhead<br />

hazards.<br />

Back downgrades when carrying a load.<br />

No riders, unless a passenger seat is provided.<br />

Forks are not to be used as an elevator or as a work platform.<br />

Lower forks all the way down before leaving the equipment.<br />

Do not drive along the edge of raised docks, platforms, or ramps.<br />

10.2.10 Mechanical Material Handling<br />

Know the weight of the load to be moved.<br />

Know the capacity of the equipment to be used to move the load.<br />

Use tag lines to control the load. Keep tag line free of your body, and free of obstructions<br />

during movement of the load.<br />

10.2.11 Manual Material Handling<br />

Leg muscles are stronger than back muscles. Lift with your legs not your back. Bend knees,<br />

keep back straight, tighten abdomen, using legs, make a smooth controlled lift.<br />

Plan before you lift—consider weight, size, shape, path of travel, and set down location. Get<br />

help if necessary.<br />
