Extrusion welding cannot be used torepair damaged HDPE pipe.• Mechanical joints.—The most common mechanical joint is the flange adapter.Flanged connections are often used to connect HDPE pipe to steel pipe. Theflange adaptor consists of a stub end, which is typically butt fused to the HDPEpipe, and a flanged end, which is joined with bolts and nuts to the flanged endof another pipe. Flanged connections allow for easy assembly and disassemblyof the joint. Flange joints tend to require more annular space than butt fusionjoints.301
