IntroductionFlowing water from the reservoir continues the internal erosion process withinthe void. Intergranular seepage is not necessarily involved in this process, andthe soils surrounding the void may be unsaturated.The resulting failure often leaves a tunnel-shaped void along the conduit.Figure 9 (cont’d).—The internal erosion process associated with the creation of a voidcaused by excessive compactive energy used to compact embankment materials against theconduit.13
