IntroductionWater from the reservoir penetrates the hydraulic fracture, initiating internalerosion of the side walls.Flowing water from the reservoir continues the internal erosion process withinthe hydraulic fracture. Intergranular seepage is not necessarily involved in thisprocess, and the embankment materials surrounding the void may beunsaturated.A void was formed along the conduit due to water flowing <strong>through</strong> a hydraulic fracture.Figure 8 (cont’d).—The internal erosion process as a result of low density embankmentmaterials under the haunches of a pipe due to poor compaction.11
