3Configuring the SwitchManaging FirmwareYou can upload/download firmware to or from an FTP or TFTP server. Just specifythe method of file transfer, along with the file type and file names as required. Bysaving run-time code to a file on an FTP or TFTP server, that file can later bedownloaded to the switch to restore operation.Note: You can also download and upload files to the switch using HTTP, see “Uploadingand Downloading Files Using HTTP” on page 3-30.Only two copies of the system software (i.e., the run-time firmware) can be stored inthe file directory on the switch. When downloading run-time code, the destination filename can be specified to replace the current run-time code file, or the file can befirst downloaded using a different name from the current run-time code file, and thenthe new file set as the startup file.Command Attributes• File Transfer Method – The firmware copy operation includes these options:- file to file – Copies a file within the switch directory, assigning it a new name.- file to tftp – Copies a file from the switch to a TFTP server.- tftp to file – Copies a file from a TFTP server to the switch.- file to ftp – Copies a file from the switch to an FTP server.- ftp to file – Copies a file from an FTP server to the switch.• TFTP/FTP Server <strong>IP</strong> Address – The <strong>IP</strong> address of an FTP or TFTP server.• User Name – The user name for FTP server access.• Password – The password for FTP server access.• File Type – Specify opcode (operational code) to copy firmware.• File Name – The file name should not contain slashes (\ or /), the leading letter ofthe file name should not be a period (.), and the maximum length for file names onthe FTP/TFTP server is 127 characters or 31 characters for files on the switch.(Valid characters: A-Z, a-z, 0-9, “.”, “-”, “_”)Note: Up to two copies of the system software (i.e., the run-time firmware) can be storedin the file directory on the switch. The currently designated startup version of thisfile cannot be deleted.Automatic Operation Code UpgradeThe system can be configured to automatically download an operation code filewhen a file newer than the currently installed one is discovered on the file server.After the file is transferred from the server and successfully written to the file system,it is automatically set as the startup file, and the switch is rebooted.Command Usage• If this feature is enabled, the switch searches the defined URL once during thebootup sequence.• FTP (port 21) and TFTP (port 69) are both supported. Note that the TCP/UDP portbindings cannot be modified to support servers listening on non-standard ports.3-22
