It has operated on a tightbudget, and distributed loans at low cost because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> already exist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>frastructure with<strong>in</strong>Arctic <strong>Co</strong>-<strong>operatives</strong>.The Benefits <strong>of</strong> MembershipMembers <strong>of</strong> co-<strong>operatives</strong> can…• own <strong>the</strong> co-operative;• share <strong>in</strong> its surplus or pr<strong>of</strong>its <strong>in</strong> proportion to <strong>the</strong>ir use <strong>of</strong> it;• <strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>the</strong> policies that govern <strong>the</strong> co-operative;• <strong>in</strong>vest <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir co-operative;• benefit from what <strong>the</strong> co-operative does <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir community;• learn from <strong>the</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and education programmes <strong>the</strong> co-op provides; and• be proud <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir own organization.In addition, <strong>the</strong> member co-<strong>operatives</strong> have learned that <strong>the</strong> fund is a k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>surance mechanismthrough which <strong>the</strong>y help each o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> times <strong>of</strong> need, mean<strong>in</strong>g that only one loan has notbeen paid—by a co-operative that had closed its doors—and most loans are repaid be<strong>for</strong>e <strong>the</strong>yare due. <strong>Co</strong>-<strong>operatives</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> good stand<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> fund partly because it is good bus<strong>in</strong>essto do so, but also because <strong>the</strong>y are work<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong>ir peers <strong>in</strong> a common enterprise. The fundis a strik<strong>in</strong>g example <strong>of</strong> how co-<strong>operatives</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g toge<strong>the</strong>r can create collective capital andshare resources <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> common good.Seventh, co-<strong>operatives</strong> have a deep attachment to <strong>the</strong>ir communities. They cannot be boughtand sold without member agreement, which should obviate concerns among <strong>Aborig<strong>in</strong>al</strong> peopleabout los<strong>in</strong>g control over any successful enterprise <strong>the</strong>y manage. It is a <strong>for</strong>m <strong>of</strong> enterprise thatcannot be sold regardless <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terests <strong>of</strong> key stakeholders. That means co-<strong>operatives</strong>, whenoperated properly, will contribute permanently to a community’s economic and social health.Dimensions <strong>of</strong> <strong>Co</strong>-<strong>operatives</strong> That Matter• <strong>the</strong>y are driven by member needs;• <strong>the</strong>y are based on democratic pr<strong>in</strong>ciples;• <strong>the</strong>y build member commitment over time;• <strong>the</strong>y encourage self-responsibility;• <strong>the</strong>y are autonomous from politics, governments, and capitalist enterprise;• <strong>the</strong>y build through co-operation among co-<strong>operatives</strong>;• <strong>the</strong>y are concerned about communities; and• <strong>the</strong>y promote gradual, secure development.~ 27
