The return on equity (ROE) ratio gives an <strong>in</strong>dication<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> return from bus<strong>in</strong>ess pr<strong>of</strong>its on <strong>the</strong> shareholder <strong>in</strong>vestment by compar<strong>in</strong>g pr<strong>of</strong>its withshareholder equity. As <strong>in</strong>dicated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> table, <strong>the</strong> ROE <strong>for</strong> 1986 is very high at 83 percent.Revenues from <strong>the</strong> various bus<strong>in</strong>esses were very good, and <strong>the</strong> gross marg<strong>in</strong> was reasonable,and <strong>the</strong>se were reflected <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> net pr<strong>of</strong>it. In fact, <strong>the</strong> net pr<strong>of</strong>it <strong>in</strong> 1986 is similar to <strong>the</strong> netpr<strong>of</strong>it earned <strong>in</strong> 1990, but <strong>the</strong> shareholders’ equity was almost three times greater <strong>in</strong> 1990. Thisexpla<strong>in</strong>s <strong>the</strong> decl<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g but still healthy ROE. The rate <strong>of</strong> growth <strong>in</strong> shareholders’ equity outstripped<strong>the</strong> steady but slower rate <strong>of</strong> growth <strong>in</strong> net pre-tax pr<strong>of</strong>it over <strong>the</strong> period. For everydollar <strong>in</strong>vested by a co-op member, revenue earned ranged from 30¢ to 83¢. Even though ROEhas decl<strong>in</strong>ed, a 30 percent ROE is an <strong>in</strong>dication <strong>of</strong> a healthy bus<strong>in</strong>ess.The sales-to-asset ratio <strong>in</strong>dicates how many times each dollar <strong>in</strong>vested <strong>in</strong> company assetsgenerates revenue. If <strong>the</strong> ratio is low, <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> company may need to <strong>in</strong>vest <strong>in</strong> more assets tobuild <strong>the</strong> capacity to generate more revenue. The co-op bus<strong>in</strong>esses <strong>in</strong> aggregate generated closeto twice <strong>the</strong> revenue <strong>for</strong> every dollar <strong>in</strong>vested <strong>in</strong> assets <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> first four years recorded <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>table. This ratio dropped to 1.41 times <strong>in</strong> 1990, which reflects <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>creased <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong>assets dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> year. Increased revenues from this <strong>in</strong>vestment would not yet be recorded <strong>in</strong><strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ancial statements.Salaries have grown steadily and peaked <strong>in</strong> 1990 to more than $456,000. This is a 180 percent<strong>in</strong>crease over 1986 salaries and reflects <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>creased bus<strong>in</strong>ess activity. Patronage dividendswere declared <strong>in</strong> each year <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> five-year period and ranged from $107,000 <strong>in</strong> 1988 to$325,000 <strong>in</strong> 1990. Patronage refunds range from 36 percent to 92 percent <strong>of</strong> net pr<strong>of</strong>its aftertaxes. This is a healthy return on <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestment made by co-op members.The next sections will identify a number <strong>of</strong> reasons <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> success <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> co-op and areas <strong>for</strong>improvement.~ 299
