A P P E N D I X I ~years ago. The o<strong>the</strong>r grant was used <strong>for</strong> start<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Chester Fried Chicken operation run by <strong>the</strong>co-op. The federal grant <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> chicken outlet helped to create twelve jobs with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> co-opand <strong>the</strong> community. The government’s primary concern when provid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> grant was howmany jobs would be created as a result. Bob Walker, who has managed <strong>the</strong> co-op s<strong>in</strong>ce 1988,estimated that <strong>the</strong> co-op would be able to create four new jobs with <strong>the</strong> government grant, but<strong>the</strong> need <strong>for</strong> twelve emerged by <strong>the</strong> time <strong>the</strong> project was f<strong>in</strong>ished.Although <strong>the</strong> co-op has faced difficulties periodically, <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess has been very successful<strong>for</strong> quite some time. Careful f<strong>in</strong>ancial management <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> co-op’s assets is a top priority <strong>for</strong>management and <strong>the</strong> board. This is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> reasons that <strong>the</strong> co-op has enjoyed so muchsuccess. As Bob notes, “You can do a lot <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se communities if you have <strong>the</strong> money to doit and someone <strong>in</strong> place who has <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess at heart.” The co-op receivesf<strong>in</strong>anc<strong>in</strong>g from private sources, such as <strong>the</strong> Canadian Imperial Bank <strong>of</strong> <strong>Co</strong>mmerce (CIBC), <strong>for</strong>various <strong>in</strong>itiatives. Currently, <strong>for</strong> example, <strong>the</strong> community is construct<strong>in</strong>g a new build<strong>in</strong>g thatwill house a larger restaurant. Partial f<strong>in</strong>anc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> project was obta<strong>in</strong>ed through CIBC,with <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong>der <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> funds com<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> co-op’s own f<strong>in</strong>ancial assets.Education and Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>gThe co-op <strong>in</strong> Stanley Mission has been quite <strong>for</strong>tunate with respect to education and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.The co-op is part <strong>of</strong> Federated <strong>Co</strong>-<strong>operatives</strong> Limited (FCL) and because <strong>of</strong> this is able to takeadvantage <strong>of</strong> various tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programmes. The co-op can always use tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programmes <strong>for</strong>employees, who <strong>of</strong>ten take courses that will enable <strong>the</strong>m to do <strong>the</strong>ir jobs more effectively. Oneemployee, <strong>for</strong> <strong>in</strong>stance, was recently sent to take a course at Northlands <strong>Co</strong>llege <strong>in</strong> La Ronge.Bob notes that it would be helpful to <strong>the</strong> co-op <strong>in</strong> Stanley Mission and o<strong>the</strong>r bus<strong>in</strong>esses <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>area if more courses relevant to bus<strong>in</strong>ess were available at nearby education <strong>in</strong>stitutions suchas Northlands <strong>Co</strong>llege. Employees also learn about <strong>the</strong>ir roles and responsibilities through<strong>for</strong>mal policy developed by <strong>the</strong> co-op. In addition <strong>the</strong>y must, <strong>of</strong> course, adhere to governmentpolicies.Any member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> co-op is free to run <strong>for</strong> positions on <strong>the</strong> board <strong>of</strong> directors. Members learnabout <strong>the</strong> roles and responsibilities <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> board <strong>of</strong> directors at <strong>the</strong> annual general meet<strong>in</strong>g,when directors are also nom<strong>in</strong>ated and elected. S<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> co-op <strong>in</strong> Stanley Mission has beenaround <strong>for</strong> quite some time, new directors are able to learn from o<strong>the</strong>rs who have served on <strong>the</strong>board <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> past.<strong>Co</strong>mmunity Impact and InvolvementThe Amachewespimaw<strong>in</strong> <strong>Co</strong>-op has had a significant impact on <strong>the</strong> community <strong>of</strong> StanleyMission. The co-op’s bus<strong>in</strong>ess operations have been very successful over <strong>the</strong> past several374 ~
