A P P E N D I X I ~Bill states, “I th<strong>in</strong>k that we have been leaders <strong>in</strong> Cambridge Bay <strong>for</strong> br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> biodegradablematerials. We’re always look<strong>in</strong>g at new products, especially to replace plastic bags. I must saythat disposable diapers are one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> worst pollutants <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Arctic. I see a lot <strong>of</strong> diapers out on<strong>the</strong> tundra when I go hunt<strong>in</strong>g.” Ano<strong>the</strong>r item <strong>of</strong> note is that by keep<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> fishery go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>shortest period <strong>of</strong> time possible, <strong>the</strong> co-op is m<strong>in</strong>imiz<strong>in</strong>g any waste products, which mightcreate pollution <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> community.Susta<strong>in</strong>ability <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bus<strong>in</strong>essesAfter wea<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> slump <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1980s, Bill is cautiously optimistic about <strong>the</strong>ir chances <strong>of</strong>surviv<strong>in</strong>g ano<strong>the</strong>r economic downturn. He states, “I’ve got to go through a slump to know ifwe could survive because people don’t spend money. They always have to buy groceriesthough. We may not suffer as much, but we would suffer.”Future DevelopmentAny plans <strong>for</strong> future expansion would be cont<strong>in</strong>gent on <strong>the</strong> impact <strong>of</strong> competition and <strong>the</strong>availability <strong>of</strong> skilled labour. Additional services <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> short term might <strong>in</strong>clude a pizza orfast-food outlet <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> store or <strong>the</strong> hotel. In <strong>the</strong> long term, a new retail outlet and hotel expansionare possible. Bill expla<strong>in</strong>s, “The build<strong>in</strong>g which houses our retail operations is ten yearsold now, but build<strong>in</strong>gs don’t last with <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> wea<strong>the</strong>r that we have here. The board <strong>of</strong>directors is look<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> a new piece <strong>of</strong> land to build a store and perhaps a daycare centre. Wemay expand <strong>the</strong> hotel, but we have to see <strong>the</strong> impact that <strong>the</strong> new hotels will have on ourbus<strong>in</strong>ess first.”Bill has no firm plans <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> future but he knows he will always support <strong>the</strong> co-op, at least as amember. He plans to retire someday.I’ve been with <strong>the</strong> co-op almost ten years. I took on a challenge that I th<strong>in</strong>k has cometo an end because <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess is successful. I would say get out while everyth<strong>in</strong>g iswork<strong>in</strong>g right and <strong>the</strong>n if <strong>the</strong>y get <strong>in</strong> trouble, <strong>the</strong>y can call me <strong>in</strong> to help with it. I’mgett<strong>in</strong>g to that age when I have to look <strong>for</strong> someth<strong>in</strong>g else ra<strong>the</strong>r than do<strong>in</strong>g this all <strong>the</strong>time. I might start a tour operation and live <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> land. I like fish<strong>in</strong>g, hunt<strong>in</strong>g, andwalk<strong>in</strong>g. I want to do someth<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>in</strong>terests me because <strong>the</strong>re are a lot <strong>of</strong> parties andyou could end up an alcoholic quickly. I really don’t want that <strong>for</strong> myself.I th<strong>in</strong>k we have people <strong>in</strong> place who have <strong>the</strong> ability to cont<strong>in</strong>ue operations. However even when you cultivate people as successors, you never know what youare go<strong>in</strong>g to get until <strong>the</strong>y take over. I’ve seen many problems, not only <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> co-opsystem but <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r Native organizations, where new people take advantage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>irpositions.302 ~
