~ C A S E S T U D I E SAdviceThe Amachewespimaw<strong>in</strong> <strong>Co</strong>-op is a very successful bus<strong>in</strong>ess that will undoubtedly cont<strong>in</strong>ue toexpand services and operations. Members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> board such as Joe Roberts <strong>of</strong>fer <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>gadvice to groups or communities <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> start<strong>in</strong>g a co-op. Initially, <strong>of</strong> course, <strong>the</strong>re has tobe an <strong>in</strong>terested group <strong>of</strong> people with a common need. A feasibility study should be done at <strong>the</strong>beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> process, and governments can and should play a role <strong>in</strong> prepar<strong>in</strong>g this. Be<strong>for</strong>estart<strong>in</strong>g a co-op, it is also important to make sure that people <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> community fully support aco-operative model. Questions need to be asked as well, such as what type <strong>of</strong> co-op is wantedand needed, e.g., retail, arts and crafts, etc. Joe and Lester also note that exist<strong>in</strong>g competitionshould not be viewed as a deterrent to start<strong>in</strong>g a co-op, because competition can actually help aco-op. To ensure that <strong>the</strong> organization rema<strong>in</strong>s stable, it is also important to hire a managerwho is committed to <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess and what is best <strong>for</strong> it.A N N E X 1New Initiatives <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> La Ronge RegionHistorically, nor<strong>the</strong>rn Saskatchewan has been well represented by commercial fish<strong>in</strong>g co<strong>operatives</strong>,supported by <strong>the</strong> Saskatchewan <strong>Co</strong>mmercial Fish<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Co</strong>-operative Federation. Aperiod <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>activity dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> 1980s and 1990s resulted <strong>in</strong> many be<strong>in</strong>g struck <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> cooperativeregistry. Recently, however, this sector has been revitalized, and <strong>the</strong>re are currentlythirty active co-ops, with over one hundred memberships among <strong>the</strong>m. S<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>y are just <strong>in</strong><strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong> <strong>for</strong>mally <strong>in</strong>corporat<strong>in</strong>g once aga<strong>in</strong>, <strong>the</strong>se numbers are not reflected <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>statistics <strong>for</strong> Saskatchewan. In addition, approximately ten nor<strong>the</strong>rn communities haveexpressed an <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> start<strong>in</strong>g a retail co-operative.~ 377
