The Hazeltons is a logical and perhaps unique place <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> this sort <strong>of</strong> coop.First, <strong>the</strong> GTO, through <strong>the</strong> strength <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Delgamuukw Supreme <strong>Co</strong>urt decision, has beenactively push<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> co-management and development <strong>of</strong> nontimber <strong>for</strong>est products. Second,<strong>the</strong> Hazeltons has approximately equal proportions <strong>of</strong> First Nations and non-Native people,with a history <strong>of</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g toge<strong>the</strong>r. The proximity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> co-op to Smi<strong>the</strong>rs (which has a largepr<strong>of</strong>essional community) has also promoted a number <strong>of</strong> non–First Nations to jo<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> co-op,<strong>in</strong> support <strong>of</strong> community-based alternatives to <strong>in</strong>dustrial <strong>for</strong>estry. The Gitxsan land, wheremost <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> berries are picked, is some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> richest <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> prov<strong>in</strong>ce with respect to <strong>the</strong>diversity and abundance <strong>of</strong> wild berries, mushrooms, and o<strong>the</strong>r potential nontimber <strong>for</strong>estproducts.Q.
