So for example, in the last issue of the JEL we published along review article on a book by A.S. and this is not merely a book review butalso an opportunity for the author to really talk about the field in greater <strong>de</strong>pth.And sometimes we do permit people to go over that limit, if they can make agood case for it. The cost always come into consi<strong>de</strong>ration. We have a budget thatwe have to adhere to. But that is not the primary reason. I think we could make acase if we thought one existed for more or longer book reviews, we simply justdon’t think the case is there.A general ten<strong>de</strong>ncy was observed among the editors that few journals provi<strong>de</strong>clear gui<strong>de</strong>lines to be adopted by reviewers as for the type of information to be inclu<strong>de</strong>dor the organization to be adopted in the text.[E]We actually send out gui<strong>de</strong>lines to the reviewers along with some samples ofwhat we regard as particularly good reviews. ...We do reject reviews becausethey are badly written, but what we usually do at that point is to write back to thereviewer and suggest some changes.The short length of BRs se<strong>em</strong>s to be conditioned by the very nature of the genreand by the less important role it has in the aca<strong>de</strong>mic community (compared to a researchpaper, for example). However, length ultimately <strong>de</strong>pends on monetary restrictions injournal policy in all three areas, and that can be changed in special cases according to theeditors’ opinion on the relevance of the book.In general, there is a lack of formal criteria for the genre in the literature availableon the topic.
