265The quantitative analysis <strong>de</strong>veloped with the help of the microconcord programevi<strong>de</strong>nced the extent to which the sch<strong>em</strong>atic <strong>de</strong>scription of the first 60 texts wasconsistent with the r<strong>em</strong>aining 120 texts in the corpus, thus amplifying the validity of theresults. It also evi<strong>de</strong>nced the extent to which the terms of praise and blame, i<strong>de</strong>ntified inthe qualitative analysis, showed a consistent pattern of distribution across disciplines ascharacteristic ways of evaluating books according to disciplinary values. Three dyads ofevaluative terms were <strong>de</strong>fined as generally corresponding to each field: Persuasive-Unconvincing and Attractive-Uninteresting for Economics, Comprehensive-Specific andRecent-Outdated for Ch<strong>em</strong>istry, and Clear-Un<strong>de</strong>fined and Testable-Speculative forLinguistics. In addition, the dimension Deep-Simplistic was found to correspond to allfields.A number of basic hypotheses (Chapter 1) and questions (Chapter 4) for thisdissertation were laid down before the investigation properly said was <strong>de</strong>veloped.Although some of these questions and hypotheses were referred to along the discussionof the results, this chapter is an att<strong>em</strong>pt to provi<strong>de</strong> a more encompassing assessment ofthe extent to which these hypotheses and questions have been answered by the resultsobtained in the analysis of data. It also att<strong>em</strong>pts to indicate conclusions and implicationsfor the area of Genre Analysis, and more particularly for the teaching of ESP/EAP,which the findings ma<strong>de</strong> in this study se<strong>em</strong> to allow.7.1 Summary of results on the aca<strong>de</strong>mic book review as a genre
