124Paradigms” (generalized commitment among m<strong>em</strong>bers to particular theoretical mo<strong>de</strong>lswhich help <strong>de</strong>termine the inventory of researchable probl<strong>em</strong>s and their importance); (3)“Values” (merit which m<strong>em</strong>bers have to discuss when having to choose ‘betweenincompatible ways of practicing their discipline’ (ibid.:185) as, for example, betweenquantitative or qualitative methods of analysis of a probl<strong>em</strong>); and finally, (4) “Ex<strong>em</strong>plars”(concrete applications of solutions to those probl<strong>em</strong>s created within the discipline whichare to be learnt by stu<strong>de</strong>nts along the process of their ‘acculturation’ or ‘indoctrination’ ––from text books, in laboratories, and so on –– and which ultimately show how they are toconduct their practice).I will analyze evaluation practices in BRs by focusing on the ten<strong>de</strong>ncy ofdisciplines to <strong>em</strong>ploy specific ways to evaluate new knowledge production (“Value”)and to relate to previous knowledge (“Symbolic Generalizations” and “MetaphysicalParadigms” in Kuhn’s terms). To analyze variation in values I will examine the terms ofpraise and blame used to qualify the book or the author. To analyze variation in the wayreviewers relate to the body of knowledge across disciplinary boundaries, I willconcentrate on citation of previous books or studies on the topic of the book beingreviewed and on ex<strong>em</strong>plification as a way to i<strong>de</strong>ntify concepts and theories that relate tothe topic of the book.Again Van<strong>de</strong> Kopple’s (1985) taxonomy of different types of Metadiscourse canbe useful. Co<strong>de</strong> Glosses help rea<strong>de</strong>rs un<strong>de</strong>rstand the meaning of specific el<strong>em</strong>ents intexts (e.g., a word, phrase or idiom) through the use of <strong>de</strong>finition, ex<strong>em</strong>plification, orexplanation of such el<strong>em</strong>ents:
