It is the editor’s prerogative to decide whether the journal will publishreviews or not based on reality and economics like subscription rate, the income,etc. Every page which is given over to a book review, is a page which cannot beused for a research paper, and so the editor has to make a decision. Most editorswill think that since JACS publishes book reviews comprehensively, they willnot do it. They will publish more research papers instead.[E]We are one of the three journals that are published by the American EconomicAssociation. The other journals are the American Economic Review and theJournal of Economic Perspective. The JEL (Journal of Economic Literature) wasreally set up in the 1960’s to try and cover bibliographic material that would beuseful to people in research or teaching. At one time before that day, all bookreviews were published in the AER. But the JEL was established to carry surveyarticles, book reviews, and lists of bibliographic information about the contentsof current periodicals. So why do we do it? We do it because we were actuallyestablished for that purpose.In addition, the results Chen obtained for engineering BRs showed that technicalpublications are reviewed much less frequently than those in science indicating that, intechnical areas, book content is not critically discussed in the broader forums ofacademic journals.
