Its relevance forthe genre se<strong>em</strong>s to bear some parallelism with the importance of Move 1 in researcharticles (RA).In both genres, BR and RA, writers aim to establish the rationale against whichtheir texts can be un<strong>de</strong>rstood and one way to do that is to make topic generalizations tosituate the article’s or the book’s contribution to the current state of knowledge in thefield. One of the differences between the RA and the BR, however, is that in the RA thewriter aims at making the rea<strong>de</strong>r recognize the text as an important contribution along achain of research tradition in the field. In the BR, what is important is the book’scontribution to the literary tradition in the field.In Swales’ (1990) CARS mo<strong>de</strong>l of article introductions, the writer <strong>de</strong>fines theterritory within which her research can be recognized by reviewing previous research inthe field. The writer acknowledges the work of other researchers and, by doing that,<strong>de</strong>fines the line of research that her work follows, preparing the stance, i.e., the positionfrom which her own work and thus the results to be obtained can be examined.Likewise, in the BR, the writer allu<strong>de</strong>s to the line of publication of the book (topic,theoretical rationale adopted in the book, etc.), either by stating that the new book fills agap left open by previous publications or by showing it continues a tradition (in a series<strong>de</strong>voted to texts that discuss one topic, for example). Move 1 then sets the backgroundknowledge for the rea<strong>de</strong>r to accompany the reviewer in the evaluation of the book.Move 2: The next move to appear in the sequential or<strong>de</strong>r of discourse presentationcomprehends the ‘<strong>de</strong>scriptive portion’ of BRs.
