Usuallyunsigned BRs are written by the journal BR editor and tend to be shorter than signedones (Chen, 1976). That indeed happens in one of the chemistry journals, Journal of theAmerican Chemical Society (JACS), where unsigned BRs are extremely short, with anaverage of 99 words.This tendency contrasts with that of linguistics and economics journals wherethere are no unsigned BRs. The two shortest BRs in JACS are both unsigned and areone-paragraph long.
