How is positive/negative evaluation provi<strong>de</strong>d?Based on the results obtained in this <strong>de</strong>tailed analysis, a mo<strong>de</strong>l of the corerhetorical moves of BRs is proposed and an inventory of terms <strong>em</strong>ployed to conveypositive and negative evaluation is elaborated. The mo<strong>de</strong>l is later examined againstrandomly selected ex<strong>em</strong>plars of the r<strong>em</strong>aining 120 texts (of the entire corpus of 180texts) as a comparative parameter for the qualitative analysis. This comparison is anatt<strong>em</strong>pt to find out to what extent any ex<strong>em</strong>plar of BRs breaks down neatly into thecategories of rhetorical structure I <strong>de</strong>vise in the qualitative analysis.4.2.3 Linguistic clues and syst<strong>em</strong>aticityAs discussed in Chapter 2, a basic form of organization pattern in discourse is thatof text structure which refers to the global structure of the form and function of th<strong>em</strong>essage as <strong>de</strong>termined by contextual factors of text production. In the present study, textstructure will be examined in terms of moves (following Swales, 1990) and will bei<strong>de</strong>ntified by reference to certain discourse markers that function as linguistic clues thatindicate rhetorical mov<strong>em</strong>ent in the text.When discussing authors’ comments in medical discourse, Adams-Smith (1984)makes a distinction between objective and evaluative passages in the text and argues thatin objective passages, the author produces ‘objective stat<strong>em</strong>ent of accepted fact’
