I then retrieved her daily message, printed it, and analyzed it.At the end of the interviewing process with the three editors, I was able to gatherinteresting information on the three disciplinary fields which will be reported anddiscussed in the remaining of this chapter.3.2 Book reviewing as seen by book review editorsIn my attempt to capture an insider’s view on the topic, I have asked the threeeditors a variety of questions about the type, the amount, the organization, and the formof information they expect to see in a typical BR and what they think the readership oftheir journals expect from the reviewer ix . Their answers are systematized by topics andas I discuss them I will draw on information from the scarce literature on this specificgenre.Based on the analysis of the interviews, I elaborated a set of generalizations abouttopics discussed with the BR editor in chemistry, economics, and linguistics (hereafterreferred to as [C], [E], and [L] respectively). Each one of these generalizations about theeditors’ opinions on features of the genre appears in bold at the beginning of eachsection of the remaining of the chapter, acting as a summarizing statement for thediscussion that follows.3.2.1 Book review editingThe book review editor is responsible for choosing the kind of material thatwill receive a specialized criticism and for assigning this task to a member ofthe disciplinary community.
