14This study thus seeks to obtain a <strong>de</strong>tailed <strong>de</strong>scription and a <strong>de</strong>finition of anaca<strong>de</strong>mic genre, focusing on the relationship between the configurations assumed bytextual and contextual features. By textual features, I mean the way information isorganized along the text through specific linguistic structures that perform rhetoricalmoves. By context features, I mean the existing characteristic epist<strong>em</strong>ologicalorganization within disciplines, as we move along the aca<strong>de</strong>mic continuum between thehar<strong>de</strong>r sciences (represented by ch<strong>em</strong>istry) and the softer sciences (represented bylinguistics). In sum, the purpose of the present study is to compare three disciplinaryrealizations of the same genre with the intention of <strong>de</strong>termining the invariable sch<strong>em</strong>aticorganization of rhetorical moves and lexical phrases, and of <strong>de</strong>fining the variation inevaluative practices across disciplines.1.2 Basic hypotheses of the study1) The initial hypothesis is that the texts that comprehend the corpus will presentcertain general invariable features of rhetorical organization (content, form, linguisticchoices) that will not vary across disciplines. At the same time, some variation will beverified in those features more closely associated with the traditions and conventions ofthe discipline. The results obtained may contribute to the <strong>de</strong>bate about the <strong>de</strong>finition ofgeneric textual boundaries currently held amid Genre Analysts (see, for example,Swales, 1993).2) The second basic hypothesis concerns the rhetorical <strong>de</strong>finition of the genre ofbook reviews. According to Aristotle (1991), there are three types of rhetoric,Deliberative (involving <strong>de</strong>liberation about the future action in the best interests of the
