279Economics combines characteristics of the other two areas: at the same time that,because of its political component, it is not an “exact” natural science such as ch<strong>em</strong>istry,it seeks to attain the status of rigorous “scientific” discipline through the uniform<strong>em</strong>phasis on the adoption of mo<strong>de</strong>ls to study disciplinary probl<strong>em</strong>s.The ways reviewers in different disciplines provi<strong>de</strong> ‘warrants’ (Toulmin, 1958) fortheir evaluations and what in fact can serve as grounds for evaluation across disciplinesproved to be an interesting indicator of the epist<strong>em</strong>ological organization and valuesun<strong>de</strong>rlying disciplinary fields. There are at least three terms that can be selected as mostcommonly cited in each discipline. For ch<strong>em</strong>istry, Up-to-date, Comprehensive, andUseful. For linguistics, Clear, Testable and Well-<strong>de</strong>fined. And Persuasive, Original, andPleasant to read for economics. The evaluation style of reviewers in the threedisciplines varies from a lighter and more objective evaluative practice in ch<strong>em</strong>istry, to amore explicit and personal evaluation style in economics. In linguistics, reviewers veryoften produce a critique of the professional procedures used in <strong>de</strong>veloping the researchin the book. In economics, reviewers <strong>de</strong>velop a more holistic argument in which theyreinterpret the knowledge produced in the book. Ch<strong>em</strong>istry reviewers are usuallyconcerned about the amount and <strong>de</strong>pth of information contained in a book, reporting onthe contents the author chose to inclu<strong>de</strong> in the book and taking for granted theprofessional procedures adopted.Knowledge structure could be perceived as different in the corpus in that ch<strong>em</strong>istsse<strong>em</strong> to have a broa<strong>de</strong>r range of tacit knowledge than economists and even broa<strong>de</strong>r thanlinguists.
