213sentences realizing Moves 1 and 4 are similar in length across disciplines (closer to theaverage), some special tendencies were observed in Moves 2 and 3.In linguistics, Move 2, which serves a more descriptive purpose, encompasses amuch greater number of sentences than the average and is almost twice as long as that inchemistry. This would suggest that BRs in linguistics have a more extensivelydescriptive character, favoring a more detailed perspective of the book than in the othertwo fields. In economics, Move 3 deviates from the pattern of length increase from chemistryto linguistics, tending to be much longer than in the other two fields. This would suggestthat BRs in economics are more evaluative, with economists tending to concentrate onthe explicitly evaluative function of Move 3 more emphatically than reviewers in theother two disciplines. At the same time that detailed description seems to be specially relevant forlinguistics and detailed evaluation for economics, in chemistry, the number of sentencesrealizing Moves 2 and 3 is much smaller. Considering that Moves 2 and 3 serve thepurpose of describing and evaluating specific parts of the book in detail, and that Moves1 and 4 have a more global perspective (as seen in Figure 5-3 in Chapter 5), then, thefact that chemistry BRs have shorter stretches of text realizing Moves 2 and 3 than theother two disciplines indicates that chemistry reviewers favor a more general perspectiveon the publication.
