The corporate finance role is intended to help the company understand its budget and revenue stream and make strategic business decisions. In addition, many companies across a variety of industries have implemented leadership development programs (LDPs). These leadership development rotation programs provide the opportunity for students to try a variety of positions throughout a company. LDPs in finance, also known as FLDPs, could include rotations in risk management, treasury, mergers and acquisitions, and financial planning and analysis, among others. Careers in Financial Services Financial services is a term that includes a variety of segments and roles, each of which requires strong analytical skills. The economic financial crisis that surfaced in 2008 began a turbulent employment outlook in the financial services industry. It is more important than ever that MBA students do their homework on specific positions and firms that they are considering to truly
understand the financial situation of the company and industry. Careers in financial services include, but are not limited to: • Banking: retail, commercial, and investment. • Traditional asset management: retail and institutional. • Alternative investments: private equity/venture capital, hedge funds, real estate, commodities, derivatives, and currencies. • Insurance: property and casualty, life insurance, annuities, and fund management. • Consulting: management, asset planning, and financial advice. Each of these career paths requires strong analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills. The following section highlights some of the specific careers available to MBAs. It is not all-inclusive, but instead serves as a sampling of opportunities that tend to be popular among MBA graduates. Investment Banking Investment banking refers to the raising of capital (money) for firms that allows them to expand, conduct mergers and acquisitions, or enter new markets. Investment banking can be a very prestigious opportunity for those who enter immediately upon graduation with an MBA degree, and competition for positions in investment banking can be very stiff. At the same time, investment bankers, especially at entry levels, can expect to work 80 to 100 hours per week. Undergraduates typically enter into the analyst position in an investment bank. Analysts complete much of the financial modeling and entry-level tasks associated with completing deals. MBAs, in contrast, usually enter as associates, one level above the analysts. Associates also work long hours and spend much of their time on financial models and pitch books. Associates, however, unlike analysts, spend more time in client-facing activities. The year 2008 proved to be a turbulent time in the financial services industry overall, with significant turmoil in the investment banking industry. Top investment banking firms, such as Lehman Brothers, found themselves in significant financial difficulties. This resulted in many mergers, acquisitions, and takeovers. The resulting downsizing and layoffs mean that the competition for positions in the surviving investment banks is even stiffer than it was before. Hedge Funds A hedge fund is a private investment fund open to a limited range of investors that is permitted by regulators to undertake a wider range of activities than other investment funds and also pays a performance fee to its investment manager. Each fund will have its own strategy which determines the type of investments and the methods of investment it undertakes. Hedge funds as
