MBA student: “Well, I go to [Great Reputation] College. I want to go into marketing. I worked with
Allied Consumer Company and also the [Lesser-Known] Company.”
Does this sound like you? Did the MBA student accomplish his goal of advancing his job search?
Exactly what did the listener learn about him that would be compelling enough to engage with him
further or recommend him to other influencers? Answer: very little. MBA student sounds
unremarkable—so much so that it would be difficult for someone to remember, much less convey,
MBA student‟s story to others. Now consider the following:
Prospective employer: “So, Elizabeth, tell me about yourself.”
Elizabeth: “Well, currently I am in the second year of my MBA program at [Great Rep] College,
where I am concentrating in marketing. Prior to attending GRC I was a marketing analyst with Allied
Consumer Company, where I analyzed consumer spending profiles and competitive strategies. I was
also fortunate to be a marketing assistant with a smaller firm, the [Lesser-Known] Company, where I
supported the East Coast regional manager in a variety of tracking activities. Because of these
experiences, I knew I wanted a career in marketing, but I also recognized that to be successful I
needed to obtain an advanced degree within a competitive program. So in addition to the reputation of
GRC, I was very impressed by its curriculum and its emphasis on practical application of marketing
concepts. As an example, I had the opportunity to work with the [Well-Known] Financial Services
Group to help them address their new product launch. As a result of my experience and education, I
am actively seeking challenging opportunities within a financial services firm where I can leverage my
skills and experiences.
Which person do you know better? Which did a better job of differentiating himself/ herself?
Verbal Resume Structure
In creating your verbal resume, you should focus on incorporating several of the following points
into your pitch:
• Where are you now?
• Where have you been?
• What have you done?
• Why did you decide to go to school?
• What have you done at school?
• What are you looking for?
Your pitch should be tailored to your audience, the approximate amount of time allotted for the
pitch, and the setting.
