13.4 What to Inspect
There are three main categories to the inspecbion:a.
Sanitation
b. Water Supply
c. Environmental Cleanliness.
we will now look at each of these in turn. :ill .,hr, be

will do well to consult Manual Section 14 while ro,.-.i , through
this section.
13.4.1 Sanitation
13.4.1.1 Latrines: When counting latrines, mark anything on "-",o Tally
i:heet (Form HESP 5) that appears to be a buildin. de-i, ned for
excreta disposal. In rural villages this is almost always a
simple pit latrine. If by odd chance, someone h).s 0.flushing
toilet in the village, also mark that as a latrine. "'ulong

Only when it appears so dilapidated and worn out "1'.E it is
obvious no one is usin it should you not count it zas a latrine.
13.4.1.2 Unsatisfactory latrines
Next you should determine whether you juceo.: latrines
to be unsatisfactory. It will be counted as 1nsatifctory if:­
- The floor is very dirty showinjG no evid.ence of
cleaning.
- The walls are seriously cracked or eroded.
- The roof appears to be seriously leakzing.
- 'The pit is full or nearly so.
- Excessive amoants of flies, cockroaclics or other
vermin are present.
- Inadequate privacy available (e.g. no ".oo:.- or
screen).
13. 1.3 Latrine under construction:
A latrine should be counted as "Under cons':cuion,* when
it appears that honest efforts are under way to com.-lt'-e the
building of the latrine. Do not count old pits th .t:;ore
obviously dug some time ago and yer are pointed, to ,'s th
