with pleasing garments for the joyful forests,<br />

with strong boots, with divine dwellings.<br />

Similarly, as one more example <strong>of</strong> the kind <strong>of</strong> thing that may be<br />

given as outer <strong>of</strong>ferings to the deity, figure 17 shows the gestures<br />

that represent the eight signs <strong>of</strong> good fortune:<br />

1) SRI-VATSYA "the coiled knot"<br />

2) SUVARNA-CAKRA "the golden wheel"<br />

3) PADMA-KUSfJARA "the lotus flower"<br />

4) KUNDA-DHVAJA "the banner <strong>of</strong> victory"<br />

5) SITATAPATRA "the white umbrella"<br />

6) NIDHI-GHATA "the flask <strong>of</strong> treasure"<br />

7) SANKHA-VARTA "the right-handed conch shell"<br />

8) KANAKA-MATSYA "the golden fish"<br />

Pema karpo, in the same ritual, 210<br />

gives the following verses and<br />

mantras; we may note here too that these <strong>of</strong>ferings are visualized as<br />

carried by the eight goddesses <strong>of</strong> good fortune—"<strong>of</strong>fering goddesses<br />

emanating from one's own heart, bearing al<strong>of</strong>t inconceivable materials<br />

for <strong>of</strong>fering":<br />

1) May there be all good fortune<br />

by <strong>of</strong>fering this holy object <strong>of</strong> good fortune<br />

(which sets the seal <strong>of</strong> delight on the heart <strong>of</strong> the most noble)<br />

by this beautiful maiden,<br />

white as a conch shell, moonlike,<br />

proudly bearing al<strong>of</strong>t the glorious coiled knot.<br />

2) May there be all good fortune<br />

by <strong>of</strong>fering this holy object <strong>of</strong> good fortune<br />

blazing with terrible jasmine light,<br />
