The Life, Teachings and Influence of Muhammad ibn Abdul-Wahhaab
Maaturidiyyah, al- ( ﺔـﻳﺪﻳﺮﺗﺎﳌﺍ) - The followers of Abu Mansur al-Maturidi (d. 333
A.H.). This group is very close to the Ashaariyyah in their beliefs.
Madhhab (ﺐﻫﺬﻣ)- basically this refers to a person’s school of thought or opinion.
Maturidites - a common Western term for the Maaturidiyyah
Muamalaat (ﺕﻼﻣﺎﻌﻣ) - worldly transactions, as opposed to ritual acts of worship
Mufti (ﱵﻔﻣ) - one who issues fatwas
Mujaahid (ﺪﻫﺎﳎ) - one who makes jihad
Mujtahid (ﺪﻬﺘﳎ) - one who exercises ijtihaad or personal, scholarly reasoning
Murjiah, al- ( ﺔـﺌﺟﺮﳌﺍ) - an early sect in the history of Islam and an opponent to the
Khawaarij; they went to the opposite extreme concerning imaan and
claimed that even the biggest sinner is a complete and perfect believer.
Murjiites - A common Western term for the Murjiah
Mushrik (ﻙﺮﺸﻣ) - those who commit shirk (associate partners with Allah)
Mushrikeen (ﲔﻛﺮﺸﻣ) - plural of mushrik
Muslim (ﻢﻠﺴﻣ) - one who submits
Mutawaatir (ﺮﺗﺍﻮﺘﻣ) - something narrated in such a way, such as by so many people
in each generation, that there is no question about its correctness and
authenticity
Mutawwa (ﻉﻮﻄﻣ) – a common term from before the time of ibn Abdul-Wahhaab; it
refers to a semi-educated or volunteer worker for the sake of Islam,
encouraging others to do what is right
Mutazilah, al- ( ﺔـﻟﺰﺘﻌﳌﺍ) - an early heretical group in the history of Islam. They were
greatly responsible for the spread of Greek thinking among the Muslims.
Among their beliefs was that the faasiq was neither a believer nor a
disbeliever but he would be in the Hell-fire forever.
Najd (ﺪﳒ) – literally, “steppes, plateau”; the land in Central Arabia where ibn Abdul-
Wahhaab hailed from.
Orientalists - non-Muslims who study or write about Islam
Qadariyyah, al- (ﺔﻳﺭﺪﻘﻟﺍ) - the sect that denies the concept of al-qadar
Rabb (ﺏﺭ) - Lord, creator, one who nourishes and sustains
Rububiyyah, al- (ﺔﻴﺑﻮﺑﺮﻟﺍ) - Related to the rabb (lord and creator)
Sahih (ﺢﻴﺤﺻ)- this is an authentic or verified hadith of the Prophet (peace be upon
him).
Sahih al-Bukhari ( ﻱﺭﺎـﺨﺒﻟﺍ ﺢﻴﺤـﺻ)
- the most authentic compilation of hadith;
compiled by Imam al-Bukhari.
Sahih Muslim ( ﻢﻠﺴـﻣ ﺢﻴﺤﺻ) - the second most authentic compilation of hadith;
compiled by Imam Muslim.
Salaat ( ﺓﻼـﺻ), also commonly salat - the Islamic ritual prayer; literally, it means
supplication.
Salaf, al- (ﻒﻠﺴـﻟﺍ) - the first three generation of Muslims, in particular, the
Companions, and those who follow their path
Salafi (ﻲﻔﻠﺳ) - one adhering to the way of the salaf
