Maaturidiyyah, al- ( ﺔـﻳﺪﻳﺮﺗﺎﳌﺍ) - <strong>The</strong> followers <strong>of</strong> Abu Mansur al-Maturidi (d. 333<br />

A.H.). This group is very close to the Ashaariyyah in their beliefs.<br />

Madhhab (ﺐﻫﺬﻣ)- basically this refers to a person’s school <strong>of</strong> thought or opinion.<br />

Maturidites - a <strong>com</strong>mon Western term for the Maaturidiyyah<br />

Muamalaat (ﺕﻼﻣﺎﻌﻣ) - worldly transactions, as opposed to ritual acts <strong>of</strong> worship<br />

Mufti (ﱵﻔﻣ) - one who issues fatwas<br />

Mujaahid (ﺪﻫﺎﳎ) - one who makes jihad<br />

Mujtahid (ﺪﻬﺘﳎ) - one who exercises ijtihaad or personal, scholarly reasoning<br />

Murjiah, al- ( ﺔـﺌﺟﺮﳌﺍ) - an early sect in the history <strong>of</strong> Islam <strong>and</strong> an opponent to the<br />

Khawaarij; they went to the opposite extreme concerning imaan <strong>and</strong><br />

claimed that even the biggest sinner is a <strong>com</strong>plete <strong>and</strong> perfect believer.<br />

Murjiites - A <strong>com</strong>mon Western term for the Murjiah<br />

Mushrik (ﻙﺮﺸﻣ) - those who <strong>com</strong>mit shirk (associate partners with Allah)<br />

Mushrikeen (ﲔﻛﺮﺸﻣ) - plural <strong>of</strong> mushrik<br />

Muslim (ﻢﻠﺴﻣ) - one who submits<br />

Mutawaatir (ﺮﺗﺍﻮﺘﻣ) - something narrated in such a way, such as by so many people<br />

in each generation, that there is no question about its correctness <strong>and</strong><br />

authenticity<br />

Mutawwa (ﻉﻮﻄﻣ) – a <strong>com</strong>mon term from before the time <strong>of</strong> ibn Abdul-Wahhaab; it<br />

refers to a semi-educated or volunteer worker for the sake <strong>of</strong> Islam,<br />

encouraging others to do what is right<br />

Mutazilah, al- ( ﺔـﻟﺰﺘﻌﳌﺍ) - an early heretical group in the history <strong>of</strong> Islam. <strong>The</strong>y were<br />

greatly responsible for the spread <strong>of</strong> Greek thinking among the Muslims.<br />

Among their beliefs was that the faasiq was neither a believer nor a<br />

disbeliever but he would be in the Hell-fire forever.<br />

Najd (ﺪﳒ) – literally, “steppes, plateau”; the l<strong>and</strong> in Central Arabia where ibn Abdul-<br />

Wahhaab hailed from.<br />

Orientalists - non-Muslims who study or write about Islam<br />

Qadariyyah, al- (ﺔﻳﺭﺪﻘﻟﺍ) - the sect that denies the concept <strong>of</strong> al-qadar<br />

Rabb (ﺏﺭ) - Lord, creator, one who nourishes <strong>and</strong> sustains<br />

Rububiyyah, al- (ﺔﻴﺑﻮﺑﺮﻟﺍ) - Related to the rabb (lord <strong>and</strong> creator)<br />

Sahih (ﺢﻴﺤﺻ)- this is an authentic or verified hadith <strong>of</strong> the Prophet (peace be upon<br />

him).<br />

Sahih al-Bukhari ( ﻱﺭﺎـﺨﺒﻟﺍ ﺢﻴﺤـﺻ)<br />

- the most authentic <strong>com</strong>pilation <strong>of</strong> hadith;<br />

<strong>com</strong>piled by Imam al-Bukhari.<br />

Sahih Muslim ( ﻢﻠﺴـﻣ ﺢﻴﺤﺻ) - the second most authentic <strong>com</strong>pilation <strong>of</strong> hadith;<br />

<strong>com</strong>piled by Imam Muslim.<br />

Salaat ( ﺓﻼـﺻ), also <strong>com</strong>monly salat - the Islamic ritual prayer; literally, it means<br />

supplication.<br />

Salaf, al- (ﻒﻠﺴـﻟﺍ) - the first three generation <strong>of</strong> Muslims, in particular, the<br />

Companions, <strong>and</strong> those who follow their path<br />

Salafi (ﻲﻔﻠﺳ) - one adhering to the way <strong>of</strong> the salaf
