<strong>The</strong> <strong>Life</strong>, <strong>Teachings</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Influence</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Muhammad</strong> ibn Abdul-Wahhaab<br />

Shahaadah ( ﺓﺩﺎﻬـﺷ) - “testimony,” herein it refers to the testimony <strong>of</strong> faith, “I bear<br />

witness that there is none worthy <strong>of</strong> worship except Allah <strong>and</strong> that<br />

<strong>Muhammad</strong> is the Messenger <strong>of</strong> Allah.”<br />

Shaikh ( ﺦﻴـﺷ) - religious leader, scholar or respected person, also used for Sufi<br />

leaders; traditionally used for the leader <strong>of</strong> a Bedouin tribe (as opposed to<br />

ameer which was usually used for the head <strong>of</strong> the city-states)<br />

Shareeah (ﺔﻌﻳﺮﺷ)- Islamic law.<br />

Shiah (ﺔﻌﻴﺷ) - a sectarian group founded years after the death <strong>of</strong> the Prophet (peace<br />

be upon him); they claim that Ali ibn Abu Taalib should have been the first<br />

caliph instead <strong>of</strong> Abu Bakr; <strong>and</strong> they claim to be the followers <strong>of</strong> the<br />

descendants <strong>of</strong> Ali<br />

Shiites – Western term for Shiah<br />

Shirk (ﻙﺮﺷ)- the associating <strong>of</strong> partners with Allah.<br />

Soorah (ﺓﺭﻮﺳ), also <strong>com</strong>monly Surah - a “chapter” <strong>of</strong> the Quran<br />

Sufis - these are the groups among Muslims that emphasize mystical practices,<br />

remembrance <strong>of</strong> Allah <strong>and</strong> other aspects.<br />

Sunnah (ﺔﻨﺳ) - practice <strong>of</strong> the Prophet (peace be upon him).<br />

Sunni (ﲏﺳ) – one on the path <strong>of</strong> the ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamaah (see above).<br />

Surah (ﺓﺭﻮﺳ)- this is a “chapter” from the Quran.<br />

Taaghoot (ﺕﻮﻏﺎﻃ) - false god or false object <strong>of</strong> worship<br />

Tafseer (ﲑﺴﻔﺗ) - Quranic <strong>com</strong>mentary <strong>and</strong> exegesis.<br />

Taqleed (ﺪﻴﻠﻘﺗ) – following; most <strong>of</strong>ten used while referring to the “blind obedience”<br />

to a particular school <strong>of</strong> fiqh or scholar<br />

Tawassul ( ﻞـﺳﻮﺗ) – seeking a means <strong>of</strong> approach; for example, one refers to one’s<br />

good deeds done sincerely for Allah’s sake while praying to Allah in hopes<br />

that such will lead Allah to accept one’s prayers<br />

Tauheed, al- (also, tawheed, tawhid, tauhid) (ﺪﻴﺣﻮﺘﻟﺍ) - Islamic monotheism<br />

Tauheed al-Asmaa wa al-Sifaat, al- ( ﺕﺎﻔﺼـﻟﺍﻭ ﺀﺎﲰﻷﺍ ﺪﻴﺣﻮﺘﻟﺍ) - tauheed <strong>of</strong> Allah<br />

with respect to His names <strong>and</strong> attributes; He is the only one who possesses<br />

His perfect, <strong>com</strong>plete <strong>and</strong> majestic attributes.<br />

Tauheed al-Ruboobiyah, al- (ﺔﻴﺑﻮﺑﺮﻟﺍ ﺪﻴﺣﻮﺘﻟﺍ) - the tauheed <strong>of</strong> Allah with respect to<br />

His Lordship <strong>and</strong> His actions, such as He is the only creator, the only<br />

sustainer, the only one who maintains <strong>and</strong> nourishes the creation <strong>and</strong> so<br />

forth.<br />

Tauheed al-Uloohiyah, al- ( ﺔـﻴﻫﻮﻟﻷﺍ ﺪﻴﺣﻮﺘﻟﺍ) - the tauheed <strong>of</strong> Allah with respect to<br />

His Godhood; in other words, He is the only God <strong>and</strong> the only one worthy <strong>of</strong><br />

worship <strong>and</strong>, hence, He is the only one that a person should take as his God<br />

<strong>and</strong> object <strong>of</strong> worship.<br />

Uff (ﻑﺃ) - a slight word <strong>of</strong> rebuke<br />

Uluhiyyah (ﺔﻴﻫﻮﻟﺃ) - related to the ilaah (God, worshipped one)<br />

Ummah ( ﺔـﻣﺃ) - “nation, people,” it refers either to the Muslim nation or the people<br />

who have been addressed by the Prophet <strong>Muhammad</strong> (peace be upon him),<br />

which would be all <strong>of</strong> mankind from his time until the day <strong>of</strong> Judgment.<br />
