Porque si lo interpretamos al ap·'>stol en este sentido,. el paso siguiente será que le contestemos a .,us enseitanzas <strong>de</strong> la slg~lent~ manera: "Bien, 'hagamos entonces males para que vengan bIenes (Ro. 3:8), <strong>de</strong>jemos <strong>de</strong> hacer el bien, que <strong>de</strong> todos modos iremos al cielo sin mover un <strong>de</strong>do". Que ésta será la consecuencia, está fuera <strong>de</strong> toda duda. Pues si el apóstol rechazó todas aquellas obras recién mencionadas, ya no queda otra obra alguna que no sea igualmente rechazada; porque ninguna obra es tal que sin ell~ no pueda haber salvación. Así lo vemos en los infantes y en los mitos, en los enfermos, los cautivos, los pobres: para ellos, dichas obras <strong>de</strong> piedad no son necesarias, y ni siquiera son posibles, al menos no todas. Es más: no hay persona alguna para la cual todas estas obras sean necesarias o posibles, sino que basta con el "amor nacido <strong>de</strong> corazón limpio" etc., como dijimos más arriba. Esto empero está en contradicción con lo que el propio apóstol <strong>de</strong>clara con respecto a ciertas viudas que "incurren en con<strong>de</strong>nación porque quebrantaron su primera fe y quieren casarse" (l Ti. 5: 11,12). Era necesario, pues, que permaneciesen en el estado <strong>de</strong> viu<strong>de</strong>z ("porque impulsadas por sus <strong>de</strong>seos, se rebelan contra Cristo", es <strong>de</strong>cit, se entregan a excesos en el vestir y comer). Y el Señor dice en el Evangelio hasta en cuanto a cosas <strong>de</strong> ínfima importancia: "Esto era necesario hacer, sin <strong>de</strong>jar <strong>de</strong> hacer aquello" (Mt. 23:23; Lc. 11 :42). Asimismo, en el libro <strong>de</strong> Jeremías se ensalza gran<strong>de</strong>mente a la familia <strong>de</strong> los recabitas porque no bebían vino ni edificaban casa, e incluso se los alaba por obe<strong>de</strong>cer en ello al mandamiento <strong>de</strong> su padre Jonadab (comp. Jer. 35:14). Y el apóstol mismo circuncidó a Timoteo, presentó ofrendas y se purificó en el templo, como po<strong>de</strong>mos leer en el Libro <strong>de</strong> los Hechos (comp. Hch. 16:3; 21 :26). La respuesta es: Es verdad: conforme a la Ley Nueva, ninguna <strong>de</strong> estas cosas es necesaria; pero esto no quiere <strong>de</strong>cir que, <strong>de</strong>jando <strong>de</strong> hacer lo uno, se tenga la libertad <strong>de</strong> hacer lo contrario, o alguna otra cosa. Antes bien, como dice Hilario, "el sentido <strong>de</strong> una afirmación hay que extraerlo <strong>de</strong>l motivo que llevó a formularla" 3 • El hecho es que el apóstol se está dirigiendo contra los judíos y gente como ellos, que sostenían que estas obras eran tan necesarias que <strong>de</strong> no hacerlas, ni la fe en Cristo era suficiente para alcanzar la salvación. Por esto <strong>de</strong>cían también (en Hch. 15: 1) a los que ya habían llegado a la fe en Cristo y habían recibido el bautismo: "Si no os circuncidáis confor- 3 Hilarlo, De Trinitate, IV, 14. ROMANOS 431 me a la costumbre <strong>de</strong> la ley <strong>de</strong> Moisés, no podéis ser salvos", y en otra parte: "Es necesario circuncidarlos, y mandarles que guar<strong>de</strong>n la ley <strong>de</strong> Moisés" (Hch. 15:5). Lo mismo se <strong>de</strong>spren<strong>de</strong> <strong>de</strong> Gá. 2: 14, don<strong>de</strong> el apóstol preguntó a Pedro: "¿Por qué obligas a los gentiles a judaizar", como diciendo: Tú los obligas, i.e., llevas a aquellos gentiles a la creencia <strong>de</strong> que para po<strong>de</strong>r ser salvos, les es necesario abstenerse <strong>de</strong> las comidas <strong>de</strong> los gentiles. En el mismo pasaje (Gá. 2:3) leemos: "Ni aun Tito, a pesar <strong>de</strong> ser griego, fue obligado a circuncidarse". Lo mismo surge <strong>de</strong> la palabra f'juzgar", que aquí se repite tantas veces. Pues el que juzga al otro, sin duda 10 hace porque opina que aquel otro está haciendo cosas que obstaculizan la salvaci~n, y que le es necesario cambiar <strong>de</strong> actitud. Pero una vez que ha d~saparecido esa <strong>de</strong>bilidad <strong>de</strong> la fe y esa errada opinión respecto <strong>de</strong>l Iculto a Dios, le es lícito a cada cual guardar la ley entera, junto con todos sus preceptos, según sea el voto que haya h~cho. Así, la iglesia primitiva permitió por largo tiempo la práctica <strong>de</strong> ceremonias judaicas. Sobre este tema, San Agustín sostuvo una larga controversia con San Jetónimo (Epístolas 8, 9, 10 Y 19)4. Por lo tanto: así como en aquel entonces fue una tontería atribuir a aquellas cosas tal importancia que hasta se las tenía por pilares <strong>de</strong> la salvación, y entre tanto se <strong>de</strong>scuidaba la fe y el amor, que por sí solas bastan para ser salvo (actitud ésta que suscitó la más violenta reacción <strong>de</strong> Cristo; <strong>de</strong> ahí sus palabras: "Cuelan el mosquito,pero tragan el camello", en Mt. 23:24) -así es una t011 teria y un <strong>de</strong>spropósito también ahora, y lo será siempre, i<strong>de</strong>ntificar la religión cristiana con esa ostentación exterior, como suele hacerse en nuestro siglo, con distinciones en cuanto a días festivos, alimentos, hábitos Y lugares, y entre tanto arrojar por la borda los mandamientos <strong>de</strong> Dios junto con la fe y el amor. Por lo tanto, aunque hoy día se pue<strong>de</strong> actuar en este asunto con entera libertad, sin embargo le es lícito a cada cual obligarse mediante un voto, por amor a Dios, a observar esto o aquello. De este modo, la obligación ya no emana <strong>de</strong> la Nueva Ley, sino <strong>de</strong>l voto que uno mismo se impuso por amor a Dios. Pues ¿quién será tan necio como para negar que cada uno pue<strong>de</strong> renunciar a su libertad en obsequio <strong>de</strong> otra persona, y hacerse siervo y atarse, ya sea a un <strong>de</strong>terminado lugar, o mediante la observancia <strong>de</strong> cierto día, u otra obra semejante - siempre que lo haga realmente por amor, y con la convicción, basada en su fe, <strong>de</strong> que 10 hace no porque fuera 4 Lutero se atiene a la numeraci6n que aparece en las ediciones antiguas (p.ej. Por consiguiente: todas las cosas quedan a nuestra libre discreción, pero mediante un voto hecho por amor po<strong>de</strong>mos "ofrendarlas". Mas una vez que haya ocurrido '.:sto, la obra queda convertida en necesaria, no por su naturaleza, ¡.ino por el voto que uno hizo voluntariamente. Y entonces <strong>de</strong>be tenerse cuidado <strong>de</strong> cumplir el voto con el mismo amor con que fue hecho; <strong>de</strong> otra manera, sin amor, no es posible cumplirlo. Pues si se cumple el voto sin amor, es <strong>de</strong>cir, <strong>de</strong> mala gana, mejor habría sido no hacerlo. El que obra así, es como quien hace un voto y no lo cumple. Lo paga con el cuerpo, pero lo queda <strong>de</strong>biendo con el corazón, y así, por no cumplirlo en forma voluntaria, se convierte en un hombre sacrílego. Por eso hay muchos que son apóstatas sin aparentarlo. Mas si mio <strong>de</strong>ja <strong>de</strong> lado el amor, y dirige su atención a diversos precepto's cuya observancia presuntamente es necesaria para la salvación como en la actualidad suce<strong>de</strong> en todas partes entre los sacerdote'~ y religiosos, pero también entre los laicos preocupados por sus propias leyes y doctrinas humanas - entonces por cierto hemos cargado <strong>de</strong> nuevo con l~ superstición <strong>de</strong> los judíos y hemos reimplantado la esclavitud mOsaIca.
