Guillaume APOLLINAIRE (1880-1918)
Nord
Nord
La vie s’y tord
En arbres forts
Et tors
La vie y mord
La mort
A belles dents
Quand bruit le vent.
Extrait de «Nord / Sud», août-septembre 1917, nos 6-7, p. 10.
Walloon moorlands
Such all-engulfing sadness
Gripped my heart in those boggy uplands
When the fir stands let me take
The weight off the miles and
The west wind railed
I had left the pretty wood
The squirrels stayed behind
My pipe was trying to make clouds
In a sky
That stayed obstinately pure
I entrusted an enigmatic song but no secrets
To the pools and peat hags
The honeyed heather
Drew the bees
And my aching feet
Tramped the tenderly wedded
blueberries and cranberries
North
North
Where the life force twists
Into trees strong
And gnarled
Where life locks horns with
Death
Resoundingly
When the wind rages
Mijn Haspengouw
waar de pinksterzon je golvend groen
sappig streelt in oneindige zon
My Haspengouw
Where the Whitsuntide sun succulently
strokes your waving green in endless sun
where under the summer sun your horizons are
quivering
whilst the ears are ripening tickingly
where the mud of beets colours your roads
and the peasant drones on in hopeful labour
where the rain nurtures a sporadic river
though brings your straight and heavy furrows to
fruition
There we go and time remains.
