Willem Van TOORN, born / né en 1935
Tegen de tijd…, 1997
Tussen wolken en aarde de tekens:
dit waren wij, zijn wij. Kijk maar,
wij graven land uit het water,
stapelen stenen tot torens,
onze blik laat geen ruimte met rust.
Aan de rafelige rand van ons blikveld
raakt het oog nog vluchtig verleden:
het scheve hek, de vergeten
wan in de graanschuur, het muntgeld
met het scheepswrak mee opgegraven,
de gebroken boog van de brug.
Wij zijn hier maar even, een onrust
die tast in de stilte naar taal,
een wet om angst te beheersen.
Lees maar. Wij hebben bestaan.
By the time…
Between clouds and earth the signs:
This we were, this we are. Look,
we are digging up land from the water,
piling stones to towers,
not a single space untouched by our gaze.
On the frayed edge of our perspective
the eye still touches on transitory past:
the crooked fence, the neglected
winnow in the granary, the coins
excavated with the wrecked ship,
the broken arch of the bridge.
We are here for a short while only, unrest
in silence groping for language,
a law to control fear.
Read this. We have existed.
Translation: Marijke Hoflack.
Lis ceci. Nous avons existé.
