Victor EFTIMIU
(1889-1972)
Dobrudja
This highland with eroded knolls and rocks
O’errun by thistles in the olden time
Now boasts fine grapes on former barren lime
Like cheering presents in a Christmas box
The sunflowers strew the regions maritime
With dancing gold corollas, bounteous flocks,
With fig-trees mix with garden hollyhocks
And join the bustle of this merry chime
Greek cities, Latin statues gems of yore
Are brought to light again upon the shore
Which sparks from diamonds appears to borrow.
The hoards on which the ages grow in height
Arise out of chiliads’ night;
The days of old would like to taste the morrow.
Cités grecques, statues latines – joyaux d’antan,
Refont surface et brillent sur la rive
Tels des diamants qui paraissent empruntés.
Des trésors sur lesquels s’entassent les années
Surgissent de la nuit des temps
Les jours anciens aimeraient goûter demain.
Acasa
Era un loc sau un timp?
Universul împrejmuit cu arbori
Ca niste gratii fosnitoare
Dând sens golului
Pe care îl defineau
Între cer si pamânt.
Apoi
Gratiile au devenit
Propriile-mi coaste
Împrejmuind acelasi gol:
Un loc sau un timp.
Soarele de Apoi, éd. du Style, 2000.
Home
Was it a place or a time?
The universe bordered by trees
A profusion of bars
Giving meaning to the emptiness
Marking its edges
Between earth and heaven.
Then,
The bars became
My own ribs
Bordering the same emptiness:
A place or a time.
“The sun of the beyond”
Translation: Council of Europe, 2005.
Chez soi
Etait-ce un lieu ou un temps?
L’Univers bordé d’arbres
Foisonnants barreaux
Donnant sens au vide
Le délimitant
Entre terre et ciel.
Puis,
Les barreaux devinrent
Mes propres côtes
Bordant le même vide:
Un lieu ou un temps.
«Le soleil de l’au-delà»
