In the Spessart
Be greeted, you beloved wood!
When from far the alp-horn sounds,
With wild joy remembrance
Touches my bosom.
You stood fast for thousand years,
O forest, so dark, so noble,
You have defied the human arts
And continuously you weaved your green.
How mighty is these branches bow,
And these shrubs how dense,
Which golden playful scarce passed
The sparkling light of sun.
Up they reach with might,
The trunks so straight and strong;
Strive to the blue sky above
The shoot and pith of earth.
Through the textured veins flows
The secret blood of life,
Swells the jewelled leaves of the crown
In the green glow of spring.
Nature, here I feel your hand
And breathe your breath,
Fearsome but well known!
Your heart breaks into mine.
Then I think, how times ago,
You dark night of woods!
The freedom’s son revelled in you
And what he thought here.
You were the house and castle of the old;
To this green tent
No cry of foes ever went,
Free the world still was.
Les troncs si droits et forts;
Tu fus la maison et le château des anciens;
Dans cette tente verte
Nul cri ennemi jamais ne retentit
Libre, le monde l’était encore.
Wanderung durch den Spessart, 1927
Lichtenau, Sonnabend.
Dies ist eine alte Landschaft. Die gibt es gar nicht mehr;
Ramblings in the Spessart
Lichtenau, Saturday. The pearl of the Spessart. This is
not the Spessart inn, that is situated in Rohrbrunn – but
we rename it. Here it is right… This is an old landscape.
Such does not exist any more; here time has
stopped. If landscape would create music: this would
be a German string quartet. How the tall trees sigh, a
deep sound; so grave look the paths… All around us
the forest park soughs in the evening calm.
Promenades dans le Spessart
Lichtenau, samedi.
