Theodosis NICOLAOU (1930-2004)
Spring
In our land the stonewall blossoms in spring
And sings in a thousand colours.
The serpent juts out its head
Unravels the horror of its black beauty
Every so often changes its shirt
Weighed down by the burden of scents.
Wisely the wildflower lengthens its lean stem
Finds its way through the thorny bush’s maze
And dilates its petals to life’s sweet breeze.
And I wonder: “Will we be able
Ever to find our way
Through the dark maze of our captivity
So masterfully assembled in thorny wire?”
I wonder: “Will we be able
Ever to raise ourselves above ground
Ever to salute the dawn of spring?”
Printemps
