Vineyard of Cyprus
In one amber grape I saw them
Bacchants, Bacchantes, Satyrs.
All of Dionysus’ cunning entourage
In an inebriated feast.
In one amber grape I tasted
Your unfailing tranquillity, my vineyard
Gained by toiling to set roots
Into the barren white earth.
In “Face of an island: 25 poems from Cyprus”, Vera Korfioti and
Mona Savvidou-Theodoulou, Armida Publications, Nicosia, 2000.
Pentadactylos
Pentadactylos breathes
To my rhythm
Attuned to my pulse
Assimilated inside me
And you cannot tell Pentadactylos and me apart
Me from Pentadactylos
His blood from my blood.
And so together we pace and coexist:
Pentadactylos, the mountain range
And I, the man.
In “Face of an island: 25 poems from Cyprus”, Vera Korfioti and
Mona Savvidou-Theodoulou, Armida Publications, Nicosia, 2000.
Pentadactylos
Pentadactylos respire
A mon rythme
