<strong>Dépasser</strong> <strong>Stanislavski</strong> Giorgio Strehler À l’interlocuteur étonné qui me demanderait : « pourquoi une autre Cerisaie ? », je répondrais avec beaucoup de simplicité : parce que La Cerisaie est un chef-d’œuvre. Il suffi t donc d’être un chef-d’œuvre pour avoir « raison » d’être représenté ? Est-il juste de représenter les chefsd’œuvre ? Ou non ? Les classiques et ainsi de suite ? C’est une vieille histoire mais elle vaut la peine qu’on s’y arrête un instant. 1) Je crois que oui. Car toute grande œuvre de l’intelligence, du cœur humain est éternelle. L’idée de « momentané » est dépassée par les grandes œuvres qui représentent des points de référence pour l’homme. Je ne crois aux classiques qu’à cette condition : comme étant écrits aujourd’hui pour aujourd’hui et pour demain. S’ils ne sont pas tels, ce ne sont pas des classiques, ce sont des œuvres plus ou moins importantes, des documents plus ou moins négligeables d’un « moment » de l’histoire qui passe. Le vrai classique ne passe pas. Il peut être plus évident à certaines périodes, moins à d’autres ; certaines « choses dites » d’une certaine façon seraient aujourd’hui dites autrement, peut-être, et demain autrement encore ; de même, certains aspects formels peuvent se modifi er comme certains aspects de contenu : mais l’œuvre d’art reste intacte, elle est là et parle. Elle est juste, elle est nécessaire, elle est active, elle est révolutionnaire, toujours et toujours dans l’histoire. 2) Pourquoi malgré tout, parmi « tout le théâtre mondial », cette Cerisaie en 1974 ? Je réponds encore : parce qu’elle est magnifi que, parce que je l’aime, parce que j’en sens la nécessité. Et si je suis un interprète « juste », je devrai bien être, d’une façon ou d’une autre, ce miroir du temps dont nous parle Shakespeare, non ? Vous n’ignorez pas que c’est ma deuxième mise en scène de La Cerisaie et que je fus très malheureux à la première. Je me rappelle nettement la fi n : les applaudissements habituels, et même très chaleureux, me sembla-t-il, mais j’éprouvais un sentiment de profonde insatisfaction intérieure. Le sentiment d’avoir à peine effl euré La Cerisaie, par fatigue, inexpérience et manque de temps. La Cerisaie fut montée après La Trilogie de La Villégiature, après l’exposition créatrice de La Villégiature ; elle devait être la suite d’une même réfl exion sur la « fi n » d’une société, sur le frisson de la fi n et ses pressentiments, pendant deux moments particuliers de l’histoire européenne et du monde. Mais j’abordai la deuxième phase, le cœur un peu sec. Nous commençâmes à répéter La Cerisaie trois ou quatre jours après la première de la Trilogie de Goldoni. Cette année, après avoir repris La Cerisaie, je ferai « ensuite » La Trilogie. Le destin qui se venge, ou l’histoire, ou autre chose, je n’en sais rien, mais là aussi un effet du hasard… Je sortis dans la cour, la même qu’aujourd’hui, tandis qu’il commençait à neiger et je m’enfuis comme un voleur, plus que d’habitude, car je m’enfuis toujours aux premières de mes mises en scène. Cette fois là, je m’enfuis davantage. J’ai donc un compte à régler avec moi-même, si j’en suis capable ! Mais, évidemment, ce n’est pas de cela qu’il s’agit. Tôt ou tard, les réfl exions ininterrompues ou inachevées doivent être reprises pour qu’on les termine, qu’on les achève, ou pour savoir si nous serons un jour capables de les mener à leur terme. Mais ce n’est certainement pas ce qui me pousse aujourd’hui à penser à une Cerisaie différente évidemment, tout à fait différente de celle d’alors. Je ne sais pourquoi, je vous l’avoue, mais cette Cerisaie, telle qu’elle commence à se dessiner, est proche de Lear. Elle prolonge une réfl exion qui n’est pas formelle, mais de fond. Je dis : je ne sais pourquoi. La réfl exion, ou une partie de la réfl exion, c’est le sentiment du temps, le temps, une enquête sur le temps, sur les générations qui passent, sur l’Histoire qui change, sur le changement, sur la douleur qui « fait mûrir », « la maturité est tout ! », comme dit Edgar ! Sur l’espoir et la certitude active que ce monde, on doit le faire, qu’il se fera… je ne sais…cela et beaucoup d’autres choses encore. 61
