On Polish-Slovak language relations
Ferdinand Buffa
There are some correspondences and considerable similarities in the comprehensive structure of the
system of declension and conjugation between Polish and Slovak language, which are genetically and also
geographically very close. However, development of these languages was totally separate and independent,
from which considerable differences in the formal morphological means result; mainly while we are dealing
with unequal, in Polish language much wider range of morphological alternations or with the differences in
distribution of certain morphological suffixes. In Slovak language this led to a simplicity and regularity of
morphological system. In fact, also in the field of there were used the same word formative means and
procedures in Slovak and Polish language. Differences are the most often in the level of productivity of
certain word-formative types and in a different, in Slovak language more frequent use of formation of the
new words than in Polish language. In Slovak language this is pointing at the much closer relation between
the literary language and its non-literary layer than in Polish language, where this phenomenon can be
related to its very vivid, long-term contact with French language – mostly the abundant use of multi-verbal
names.
