der Betroffenen tatsächlich ganz außergewöhnliche Erfahrungen
gemacht haben, die mit herkömmlichen
wissenschaftlichen Modellen nur schwer zu erklären
sind. Das vorgelegte Modell will solche Erklärungen
im Einzelfall nicht zurückweisen – und kann dies
auch gar nicht. Es zeigt aber, dass zur Erklärung
des Phänomens anomalistische Vorannahmen oder
der Rückgriff auf die äußerst unwahrscheinliche
Möglichkeit des realen Kontakts mit Außerirdischen
nicht notwendig sind.

are difficult to explain with conventional models. The
presented model does not attempt to reject such explanations
in individual cases – nor can it do so. It shows
though that in order to explain the phenomenon, it is
not necessary to resort to anomalistic presumptions or
the highly improbable possibility of real contact with

Projekt D3: Der “maximal Fremde” – Voraussetzungen
und Grenzen der Kommunikation mit nonhumanen
Akteuren
Aufgabe des Projekts war die inhaltliche Vorbereitung
einer interdisziplinären Fachtagung (4. bis
6. 12. 2003 in Freiburg; in Kooperation mit dem
Institut für Soziologie der Universität Freiburg).
Gefragt wurde in der Literaturstudie nach den
empirischen und theoretischen Beiträgen der unterschiedlichsten
Fachdisziplinen zu der Möglichkeit
(und Unmöglichkeit) der Konfrontation, Kommunikation
und Interaktion mit nonhumanen Akteuren.
Im Zentrum standen dabei die Fragenkomplexe (1)
Kommunikation und Verständigung, (2) Interaktion
und Zuschreibungsprozesse und (3) Ausgrenzung und
Risiko. Die Ergebnisse der Literaturstudie gehen in die
Fachtagung und in den geplanten Tagungsband ein.

Project D3: The ‘Maximum Stranger’ – Prerequisites
and Limits of the Communication with Nonhuman
Actors
The goal of the project was to prepare the topics of
an interdisciplinary conference (4 to 6 December 2003
in Freiburg; in cooperation with the institute of sociology
of the University of Freiburg). In the literature
study the question was asked which empirical and theoretical
contributions various academic disciplines have
made to the study of the possibility (and impossibility)
of the confrontation, communication and interaction
with non-human actors. The control issues were
the following: (1) communication and understanding,
(2) interaction and processes of attribution and (3) the
phenomenon of exclusion and risks. The results of the
literature study will be a part of the conference and of
the projected conference transcript.

SETI und die Folgen
Die Ausgangsfrage des Projekts lautet, wie die Folgen
einschneidender globaler Ereignisse prognostiziert
werden können, die zwar vorstellbar, schlimmstenfalls
wahrscheinlich sind, aber in der gedachten Form – zumindest
in der historisch aufgezeichneten Menschheitsgeschichte
– noch nicht stattgefunden haben.
Untersuchungsexempel der zunächst (Projektphase 1)
theoretisch-methodologischen Studie ist der hypothetische
Kontakt der Menschheit zu einer außerirdischen
Zivilisation. Dabei geht es in erster Linie
um die Frage der möglichen kollektiven psychischen
Reaktionen auf ein solches Ereignis sowie um die
langfristigen Folgen für soziale, politische, kulturelle
und religiöse Systeme. Hierzu sind vier anwendbare
Forschungsstrategien ventiliert worden, um zu einer
Abschätzung dieser Reaktionen zu kommen: (1) die
literatur- und medienwissenschaftliche Untersuchung

Project D1: Social Reactions to the Unexpected:
SETI and the Consequences
The initial question of the project was how the consequences
of dramatic global occurrences can be predicted.
More precisely of occurrences that are conceivable,
in the worst case probable, but that have not
happened yet in the form imagined – at least not during
the historically recorded history of mankind.
The examined example for this study, which is for the
time being theoretic and methodological (project phase
1), is the hypothetic contact of humanity with an alien
civilization. The main question here is which collective
psychological reactions to such an event are possible
and which long term consequences for social, political,
cultural and religious systems could arise. In order to
arrive at an appraisal of these reactions four applicable
