Die bereits abgeschlossenen und noch laufenden Projekte
haben folgende Schwerpunkte: (a) methodische
(fMRT) eignen (b) Grundlagenstudien
zu Informationsverarbeitung, veränderten Bewusstseinszuständen
und Basis-Emotionen (c) psychosomatische
und psychopathologische Störungen
2.6.2 Methodik
Neurofeedback mittels funktioneller Kernspintomographie
Gruppe.
Multimodal Brain Imaging
Grosse Erwartungen werden in die Kombination von
unterschiedlichen Methoden zur Erfassung von Hirnaktivität
gesetzt. Insbesondere durch die Kombination
von funktioneller Kernspintomographie (fMRT) und
Elektroenzephalographie (EEG) sollen wechselseitig
die Nachteile geringer zeitlicher (fMRT) und geringer
räumlicher (EEG) Auflösung kompensiert werden. Die
zeitgleiche Erfassung von EEG während einer fMRT-
Messung ist technisch bereits möglich. Dabei auftretende
The finished and the current research projects focus on
three domains: (a) methodological studies intended
mainly for the development and training of methods
that are suitable for the specific demands of functional
magnetic resonance imagery (fMRI) (b) basic
research on information processing, altered states of
consciousness, and basic emotions (c) psychosomatic
and psychopathological disorders.
2.6.2 Methods
Neurofeedback by functional magnetic resonance imaging
An extensive software development enabled us to conduct
a typical biofeedback experiment inside the scanner.
Two groups (10 subjects each) had to move a
trace on the screen either up or down a voluntary effort.
One of the groups received contingent feedback
of the mean activity inside the Broca area (condition
contingent feedback) while the subjects of the other
group looked at a manipulated feedback signal (noncontingent
feedback). The expectation was that only
the group with the contingent feedback was able to
learn a control of the signal during the experiment (15
runs for the up and the down trials). The results suggest
that the group with the contingent feedback mastered
the trials with the ‘down’ instruction with more
success than the group with the non-contingent feedback.
Multimodal brain imaging
The investigation of brain activity is expected to benefit
from a combination of several physiological methods.
The integration of electroencephalography (EEG)
and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is
assumed to overcome the shortcomings of the particular
methods – the sparse spatial sampling of EEG and
the poor time resolution of fMRI. Simultaneous recording
of EEG and fMRI can be performed now. However,
fMRI-artifacts caused by the EEG-equipment
and EEG-artifacts caused by both the magnetic resonance
imaging techniques and by biological artifacts
due to the strong magnetic field are not fully understood
at present. A pilot study is conducted to show if
the current methods of artifact reduction are sufficient
to replicate results from standard EEG-experiments.
