PACKTECH<br />

Packtech includes several flexible packing material made <strong>of</strong> textile used for packing various goods for<br />

industrial, agricultural, consumer and other goods. It ranges from polymer based bags used for<br />

industrial packing to jute based sacks used for packaging food grains and packaging used for tea. This<br />

packaging (excluding jute) is also referred to as flexible packaging materials.<br />

The <strong>technical</strong> textile products covered under Packtech are as give below:-<br />

• Polyolefin Woven Sacks (excluding FIBC)<br />

• FIBC<br />

• Leno bags<br />

• Wrapping fabric<br />

• Jute Hessian and Sacks (including Food grade jute bags)<br />

• S<strong>of</strong>t luggage products (TT component)<br />

• Tea-bags (filter paper)<br />

Technical <strong>textiles</strong> <strong>consumption</strong> under Packtech is estimated at around Rs 14,067 crore. Woven sacks<br />

(excluding FIBC) account for around 50% <strong>of</strong> the <strong>technical</strong> <strong>textiles</strong> <strong>consumption</strong> under Packtech<br />

followed by Jute hessian and sacks (including Food grade jute bags) with around 30% share. FIBC<br />

and wrapping fabrics account for around 20% <strong>of</strong> the total usage. Usage <strong>of</strong> <strong>technical</strong> <strong>textiles</strong> in s<strong>of</strong>t<br />

luggage products, leno bags and tea-bags is less than 5% <strong>of</strong> the total usage in Packtech.<br />

Most <strong>of</strong> the demand for these products is satisfied by domestic production with imports <strong>of</strong> only<br />

around Rs 86 crore. Exports <strong>of</strong> Packtech products (<strong>technical</strong> <strong>textiles</strong> component) from India has been<br />

estimated as Rs 563 crore.<br />

The domestic <strong>consumption</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>technical</strong> <strong>textiles</strong> under Packtech is expected to increase from around<br />

Rs 14,067 crore in 2007-08 to around Rs 25,913 crore by 2012-13.The demand for the packaging<br />

products is dependent on the industrial growth. In the medium term (next 5 years), the packaging<br />

industry is expected to achieve growth at the rate <strong>of</strong> 13% year on year. The polymer based segment<br />

containing products like woven sacks, FIBC, leno bags and wrapping fabric are expected to grow at a<br />

CAGR <strong>of</strong> 17% till 2012-13.<br />

The maximum growth is expected in the FIBC segment which is used for bulk packaging segment.<br />

Use <strong>of</strong> FIBC will also increase with the increase in exports. The share <strong>of</strong> FIBC in the total Packtech<br />

market is expected to double over the next 5 years. Moreover, the Leno bags which are mainly used
