The domestic market for camping tents is in a nascent stage. The increasing popularity <strong>of</strong> outdoor<br />

adventurous sports like trekking, camping etc augurs well for the industry. However, the customers<br />

are very cost conscious when selecting a camping tent. The export market holds a better potential for<br />

the time being.<br />

The other applications include tents like wedding tents, resort tents, circus tents, exhibition tents etc.<br />

The business model <strong>of</strong> wedding tents is quite different from other tents. The tents are rented out for<br />

the purpose <strong>of</strong> various parties by service providers who <strong>of</strong>fer a host <strong>of</strong> other services like furniture,<br />

catering etc. The life <strong>of</strong> tent fabric is dependent on the usage and varies from 8 to 10 years. This<br />

industry is facing threat from increasing number <strong>of</strong> hotels and banquet halls.<br />

Market size <strong>of</strong> tents and future forecast<br />

The market size <strong>of</strong> the Defence/Para military tents (also known as ‘choldhari’ tents) depends on<br />

government spending and the requirement from various armed forces. The domestic market for these<br />

tents is estimated based on the tenders floated by various government bodies and estimations by the<br />

Director General <strong>of</strong> Supplies and Disposables. The estimated withdrawal (by DGSND) <strong>of</strong> tents and<br />

accessories <strong>of</strong> tents (Tent Private MK-3, 80 Kg MK-3, store tents) for the year 2008-09 is Rs 7.3<br />

crore. The demand for tents is inclusive <strong>of</strong> the spare parts like fly sheets.<br />

The demand for tents from the government sector was 582 MT in 2007 – 08 valued at Rs. 15 crore<br />

The State government <strong>of</strong> Rajasthan was one <strong>of</strong> the largest consumers <strong>of</strong> tents in 2007-08 with<br />

estimated <strong>consumption</strong> <strong>of</strong> over Rs. 41 lakh. The police department <strong>of</strong> Andhra Pradesh consumed 1200<br />

tents in the same year. The demand from the government sector is estimated to grow at the rate <strong>of</strong> 5%<br />

based on our discussions with the industry players and tenders in the recent past. The market for tents<br />

is estimated to increase to 743 MT by 2012 -13 thus, resulting in 595MT <strong>of</strong> demand for tent fabric.<br />

The market potential for the tent fabric would be Rs 15.35 crore in 2012-13.<br />

The demand for tents from the private sector depends on the number <strong>of</strong> social functions, popularity <strong>of</strong><br />

adventurous sports etc. The increasing spending on social functions is an encouraging factor for the<br />

industry which is also facing competition from hotels, banquet halls etc. The demand is estimated to<br />

have a growth rate <strong>of</strong> 7 %.<br />

Based on industry survey, the demand is estimated to be 1,359 MT in 2007-08 valued at Rs 34 crore.<br />

This translates into 1,085 MT <strong>of</strong> demand for fabric valued at Rs 27 crore. The market for tents in the<br />

private sector is estimated to increase to 1,734 MT by 2012-13 thus, resulting in 1,388 MT <strong>of</strong> demand
