The size <strong>of</strong> the s<strong>of</strong>t luggage industry in India today is estimated as Rs 1080 crore. The s<strong>of</strong>t luggage<br />

industry in India is expected to grow at a rate <strong>of</strong> around 25% to reach a size <strong>of</strong> over Rs 3300 crore by<br />

2012-13. Higher growth is expected from the unorganised sector as compared to the organised in the<br />

initial 2-3 years due to the high price differential. Later, the quality conscious customers will switch<br />

from the unorganised to the organised segment.<br />

Universal luggage (Aristocrat) has now been amalgamated with VIP<br />

S<strong>of</strong>t goods market is highly unorganised. In the organised segment, the leading players are VIP,<br />

Samsonite and Safari. VIP’s portfolio <strong>of</strong> brands includes V.I.P., Aristocrat, Alfa, Skybags and Delsey.<br />

During the fiscal year ended March 31, 2008, Aristocrat Luggage Limited and Quality Plastics<br />

Limited were amalgamated with the company. In the organised sector, VIP is the market leader with<br />

almost 60% <strong>of</strong> the market share whereas Samsonite leads in the premium segment. Samsonite’s global<br />

revenues in the year 2006-2007 were US$ 1,070 million, out <strong>of</strong> which 7% were from India. More than<br />

the competition amongst each other like VIP, Samsonite, Safari face bigger competition from<br />

unorganised players due to cost advantage.<br />
