Hessian cloth comprises <strong>of</strong> more than 90% <strong>of</strong> the overall jute goods exported. The major destinations<br />

<strong>of</strong> exports are USA, Egypt, UAE, Germany, Saudi and Japan. These countries totally constitute over<br />

50% <strong>of</strong> total exports. The exports <strong>of</strong> jute goods will grow and reach a size <strong>of</strong> Rs 383 crore by the year<br />

2012-13.<br />

Jute yarn is the main raw material required to make the jute fabric. This is sourced locally from<br />

various suppliers in India.<br />

Laws governing usage <strong>of</strong> Food grade jute bags<br />

The Government <strong>of</strong> India has maintained the compulsory packing <strong>of</strong> food grains and sugar at 100%<br />

under Jute Packaging Materials (Compulsory use for Packing Commodities) Act, 1987 (JPMA).<br />

However, the Hon'ble High Court <strong>of</strong> Gujarat has stayed the notification and diluted the Jute<br />

Packaging Materials (Compulsory use for Packing Commodities) Act, 1987 (JPMA) by 25% in sugar<br />

and 20% in food grains which is being contested by the Government <strong>of</strong> India.<br />

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has given its approval for compulsory packing <strong>of</strong> 100%<br />

<strong>of</strong> food grains and sugar in jute bags, for the Jute Year 2008-09 (July-June).
