Tents<br />

Tents are portable shelter made <strong>of</strong> cloth, supported by one or more poles and stretched tight by cords<br />

attached to pegs driven into the ground. Tents can be classified based on application, design and<br />

construction. Based on application the tents can be classified into four main categories –<br />

• Defence/Army tents,<br />

• Disaster relief tents,<br />

• Camping tents and<br />

• Others (Party/wedding tents, Resort tents, Exhibition tents etc)<br />

Based on design the tents can be classified as -<br />

• Frame Tents: Frame tents are supported by a tall frame, giving it nearly perpendicular sides<br />

and standing headroom throughout. The frame tents are in the silhouette <strong>of</strong> the letter A.<br />

• Dome tents: Dome tent has the ideal shape for adverse weather conditions. Its sloping pr<strong>of</strong>ile<br />

is aerodynamic, and sheds wind and rain better than any other design.<br />

• Hoop tents: The hoop tent design consists <strong>of</strong> strong and flexible poles. These tents are more<br />

suitable for camping and expedition.<br />

• Tunnel tents: These are constructed <strong>of</strong> two or more hoop along with its length<br />

Tents can be classified into three categories based on construction -<br />

• Single-fly: Tents with one layer <strong>of</strong> fabric<br />

• Double-fly: Tents with one layer <strong>of</strong> fabric and a fly-sheet<br />

• Winterized: Tents which usually have one layer <strong>of</strong> fabric, a lining (usually <strong>of</strong> cotton), a fly<br />

sheet, and a hole for a stove-pipe<br />

Product characteristics<br />

Tents are generally made <strong>of</strong> four different fabrics.<br />

• Outer tent and flysheet: fabric cover pitched over a tent to give extra protection against bad<br />

weather<br />

• Inner tent and lining<br />

• Valances/mud flaps<br />

• Ground sheet: a waterpro<strong>of</strong> sheet spread on the ground inside a tent<br />

An ideal tent fabric should have few or all <strong>of</strong> the below mentioned properties depending on the<br />

application:
