The product characteristics depend on the application <strong>of</strong> the tent. The details <strong>of</strong> dimension, weight and<br />

material used for various varieties <strong>of</strong> tents is given in Annexure 4.<br />

The wedding industry also has a huge demand for tents which is met through “shamiyana” tents. The<br />

shamiyana fabrics are typically made <strong>of</strong> cotton fabric. Their main functionality is to provide shade,<br />

thus, these tents need not be water resistant. These fabrics are made from grey cloth which is dyed and<br />

printed. The shamiyana fabric is available in different designs made by appliqué technique 15 .<br />

Market dynamics and key growth drivers<br />

The demand from the Defence, Para military forces and other government agencies like Geological<br />

Survey <strong>of</strong> India, Railways etc account for majority <strong>of</strong> the demand both in volume and value terms.<br />

Various types <strong>of</strong> tents are required by the government agencies for housing <strong>of</strong> defense personnel,<br />

stores, temporary hospitals etc. Many <strong>of</strong> the government agencies route their procurement through<br />

Director General <strong>of</strong> Supplies and Disposables (DGSND), which finalises the rate contracts with a<br />

number <strong>of</strong> tent manufacturers.<br />

The demand for relief tents is dependent on the occurrence <strong>of</strong> natural calamities. The National<br />

Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) works in co-ordination with various state and government<br />

agencies for relief operations. Most <strong>of</strong> the requirement <strong>of</strong> tents is met by assistance from the state<br />

police forces, Defence and Para military forces. The shortage <strong>of</strong> tents is met through purchase from<br />

local markets and by alternate shelters like structure from plastic sheeting poles and rope, mud walls<br />

and plastic sheeting for ro<strong>of</strong>. Relief tents are also purchased by organizations like ICRC, IFRC,<br />

UNHCR, IOM, UNICEF, MSF, World Vision etc.<br />
