CLOTHTECH<br />

The Clothtech segment <strong>of</strong> <strong>technical</strong> <strong>textiles</strong> comprises <strong>of</strong> all textile components used primarily in<br />

garment applications, which have some specific functional applications. These components are largely<br />

hidden, e.g. interlinings in shirts, sewing threads, shoe laces, labels, hook and loop fasteners (Velcro),<br />

etc. Various fabrics like umbrella cloth are also classified under the Clothtech segment.<br />

The <strong>technical</strong> textile products covered under Clothtech are as give below:-<br />

• Shoe laces<br />

• Interlinings<br />

• Zip Fasteners<br />

• Elastic Narrow Fabrics (Tapes)<br />

• Velcro<br />

• Labels<br />

• Umbrella Cloth<br />

• Sewing Threads<br />

Technical <strong>textiles</strong> <strong>consumption</strong> under Clothtech is estimated at around Rs 6,570 crore. Sewing threads<br />

alone account for around 60% <strong>of</strong> the <strong>technical</strong> <strong>textiles</strong> <strong>consumption</strong> under Clothtech followed by<br />

labels with around 19% share. Interlinings accounts for around 8% share, whereas elastic narrow<br />

fabric tapes have a share <strong>of</strong> almost 6%. Usage <strong>of</strong> <strong>technical</strong> <strong>textiles</strong> in shoe laces and zip fasteners is<br />

<strong>of</strong> total 5%. Velcro and umbrella cloth account for the remaining around 2% <strong>of</strong> the total usage in<br />

Clothtech.<br />

The domestic <strong>consumption</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>technical</strong> <strong>textiles</strong> under Clothtech is expected to increase from around<br />

Rs 6,570 crore in 2007-08 to around Rs 9,665 crore by 2012-13.The demand for the clothtech<br />

products is dependent on the growth <strong>of</strong> the garment industry. In the medium term (next 5 years), the<br />

clothtech segment is expected to achieve growth at the rate <strong>of</strong> almost 8% year on year. Exports <strong>of</strong><br />

Clothtech products (<strong>technical</strong> <strong>textiles</strong> component) from India are estimated as Rs 338 crore.<br />

The maximum growth is expected in the Hook and loop fastener (Velcro) market. The share <strong>of</strong> Velcro<br />

in the total Clothtech market is expected to double over the next 5 years. With the high growth in the<br />

s<strong>of</strong>t luggage industry, the <strong>consumption</strong> <strong>of</strong> zip fasteners is also expected to increase 12% year-on-year<br />

for the next five years. Elastic narrow tapes are also expected to have a healthy growth rate <strong>of</strong> over<br />

11% year on year.
