The sole purpose <strong>of</strong> the stator is to induce a swirl component to the<br />

flow so that a torque can be imparted to the rotor blades. Stators are<br />

typically equipped with numerous curved airfoils called vanes that turn the<br />

flow in the tangential direction. Cross sections <strong>of</strong> an axial-flow turbine stator<br />

and a radial-inflow turbine stator are shown in Fig. 3(a) and 3(b),<br />
