a photo of the castle itself (Fig. 11). A thin strip of land on a small isthmus connects it to
the mainland. Before recent consolidation works, however, the isthmus had disappeared
below sea level as can be seen in an old aerial picture published by Giulio Schmiedt in
1975 (Fig. 12). 40
